What is a Post.

what-is-a-postBlogging is a continuous process which you have to continuously feed by new content. This new content is mainly created by the post section, in-fact while our blogging journey most of the content we create are created as a post. Post have a time factor attached to it, due to this when you publish a new post then it get updated in the reverse order. This means when a new post is published it shows on the top on your homepage, older posts are archived depending on the time they were published, older the post get further the user have to go to access it.

In the post section of WordPress dashboard you can see that there are two fields Categories and tags, posts can be organized under these categories, tags. This will help you and your users to get the posts which are written on a specific topic. Due to date factor helps posts to go through in RSS feed, which helps users to get notified when a new post is published. Posts can be delivered to users Via email to when they subscribe for it, These emails are called newsletters, there are many newsletter plugins for WordPress from which you can choose from.

You can choose the the frequency of the newsletter it can be daily, weekly or any time you like. Post have a social element attached to it this means you can add social media buttons on your posts so that the readers can share it with their network. There are many social media plugins for WordPress which can add social media integration to you r posts easily.

Posts are meant to have some conversations attached to it, you users can leave comments on your post. These comments can be admiration, question about the post or sometime results in discussion, To have a nice conversation you need a good commenting system, in WordPress you have the option to use third-party commenting system which can enhance the user experience to folds.

If you don’t want to initiate comments on any specific post then while creating a post you can go to screen options » Discussion » tick off Allow comments to disable comments on a specific post. For disabling comments on older posts you can go to Settings » Discussion, stopping commenting on older posts can help you with more focusing on commenting on new posts.

What is a Page

Page is also an important factor for your blog, A page have a static factor attached to it. For every website there are few pages which are always there, these can be about us, privacy policy, contact us page etc. There are some must have pages for a website which remains always there with no date or time associated with it.

Pages don’t have a date associated with it but when you publish a post the time is stored in WordPress database, When you visit a page you will not see a time or date when it is published. Due to not being bounded by time, pages are hierarchical by nature, which means you can have sub-pages under a page, this is really useful when you have many pages which should come under a single page like if you have a deal page then you can have many sub-pages dedicated to a different types of deals.

pages

This hierarchical nature can be understood by considering page as a tree and sub-pages as branches. In WordPress there is a feature in discussion where you can disable comments on the pages, this is due to the fact that you don’t want people to comment on your terms & conditions or contact me page etc. If you like to add comments functionality to a specific page then you can add it by screen options » Discussion » Allow comments and tick it. I’ve seen many new bloggers having comments enabled on their pages, this compromises with the professional look of a blog.

Pages by default don’t have social sharing option available, this is done because you don’t like to share your terms & conditions page. Well you can if you like but there is nothing that a reader will think that they are getting some useful information out of it. In WordPress you have the option to customize the look of a page, this is done by creating custom page template. You can have a different look for every page if you like, this can be very useful for those who like to shoe their pages with a different look.

When you publish a page then you won’t be able to find it on the homepage under your latest entries. This is because pages don’t a date associated with it.
